At 8 a.m. on Thursday, McAfee, the antivirus software maker, issued an eye-catching news release: "Cameron Diaz Named Most Dangerous Celebrity in Cyberspace by McAfee Inc.; Justin Timberlake's Ex Knocks Current Girlfriend Biel to #3 Spot."

Less than 20 minutes later, the company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., issued another bit of news: Intel was buying McAfee for $7.68 billion in cash.

Of course, unlike the rest of the world, DealBook is more fascinated by a multibillion-dollar technology merger than, say, Brad Pitt (the No. 5 most dangerous) or Jennifer Love Hewitt (tied for No. 7) — or Ms. Diaz, for that matter. Still, we thought it would be a diversion to check in with Dave Marcus, a security researcher for McAfee Labs who headed up the celebrity online-crime study.
