PC worm Stuxnet hits Iran computers

A dangerous computer worm known as Stuxnet which is capable of stealing information from industrial control systems has hit computers in Iran, a report says.

A data compiled by Symantec Security Company shows nearly 60 percent of systems infected by the worm are located in Iran, Bloomberg's Businessweek a weekly business magazine reported on Saturday.

According to Symantec, the malware may have been in circulation since January.

Though it seems Iran has been the prime target, Indonesia and India and some states in the Middle East have also been affected by the malicious software.

It is not known why Iran and a number of other countries have reported the infections.

"The most we can say is whoever developed these particular threats was targeting companies in those geographic areas," said Elias Levy, senior technical director with Symantec Security Response.

Stuxnet that spreads via USB devices was first discovered by a Belarus-based antivirus company.

The computer worm was reportedly found on a system belonging to an Iranian customer.

Earlier this week, Siemens Company posted a free virus scanner to deal with the threat. Most of the control systems affected by Stuxnet are made by Siemens.
